Artist Statement: Nature is both universal and personal: her essence is a language all life inherently knows. Nature induces a visceral response within us during our journeys into her realm which transcends all social barriers and borders. Though she may seem to be beyond our society, she constructed everything we know. Nature is an evolving phenomenon that desires all to wander physically and imaginatively into her heart.

Karen Cooper’s nature photography immerses us within nature’s collective memory to connect us with our individualized moments of escape and wonder. Landscapes have an intrinsic power to mesmerize all who wander within them: Karen’s works become stages for nature to perform her melodic narrative of movement, colour, and song. The use of light and depth allow Karen’s landscapes to occupy new spaces, and envelope the viewer. Karen challenges artistic traditions surrounding nature and landscape through emerging and experimental mediums to evolve the longstanding conventions of fine art photography.

Karen's works are also a declaration for environmental preservation: the natural world is under extreme threat due to deforestation, urban expansion, and wildfires. Karen’s works are not just invitations to appreciate natural beauty, but are also moments to understand what has, and still can be, lost.

Biography: With over 20 years of in-field experience, Karen Cooper is an award winning, internationally recognized female fine art photographer whose dramatic landscape and wildlife works showcase the rich and dynamic beauty of British Columbia. Based in Vancouver, Karen’s journey in photography began in 2000 after a traumatic car accident. Encouraged by friends and family to share the photos she was taking on her rehabilitative walks, she created a blog, My Boots n Me. Entirely self-taught in photography and without formal art training, she opened the Karen Cooper Gallery on Granville Island in 2010.

Now a leader in nature landscape photography, Karen has united her beautiful images with cutting edge digital technology to create unique and visually striking artwork that creates enjoyable spaces where people can thrive. Karen’s work graces many private and corporate collections throughout the world.

The Karen Cooper Gallery resides on historic Granville Island, Vancouver's premiere art and artisan district. The gallery combines the timeless desire for nature exploration with fine art practices to produce an immersive visual narrative of the ever-changing wilderness. The Karen Cooper Gallery is where one can find a moment to connect with and reflect on the grandeur of the local natural world.
