Artist Statement: Since 2007, I have been focusing my artistic efforts on a study of anatomy and gesture through figurative bronze sculpture as well as life drawing. I am guided by a desire to express motion, emotion and levity through the still heaviness of the metal. My body of work ranges from hand-held miniatures to mid-size pieces, and is now growing to include a focus on larger and life-size figures.
Although my study is anatomy and motion, I strive for a gestural, underworked spontaneity. Often a single line or indentation in the clay can communicate mood and story in a way that can be lost by overworking.
Water too, is a strong theme in my work. From dipping a toe in at the edge of a pool, to floating on the surface, to being fully submerged, a relationship between the figure and water seems to show up for me even when when it is unintentional. It speaks to me of a cool and heavy stillness that quiets the mind and body.
Biography: As a self taught artist, making my first sculptures in the sand on beach holidays, sculpting emerged organically for me after a 20 year career in graphic design and photography. Creating figurative work felt so natural from the first time I had the opportunity to work with clay on a trip to Mexico for my 40th birthday. Looking back, however, I see the influences that led me to this work. My years living in France, Montreal and Mexico exposed me to a rich tradition of figurative bronze sculpture, mostly in the form of public art. The monumental sculpture of the angel carrying away a dead soldier that is displayed in Vancouver’s Gastown was directly across the street from my grandfather’s barber shop when I was preschool aged. Much of the work I create even today has the flavour of the grace and lightness that I feel from that piece.
I currently work from my Studio/Gallery at 1350 Railspur Alley on Granville Island. My sculptures can be seen both in private collections and galleries in Vancouver, BC, across North America and in Europe. I am a member of the Sculptors Society of BC, and I have been participating in various group and solo shows since 2009.
