Artist Statement: I am a mixed media animal artist, and my practice focuses on human-animal relationships with an emphasis on how we impact wildlife in urban and suburban settings. My work is largely drawing based, however the mediums used range from traditional drawing materials on paper and drafting film, to charcoal and icing on compostable plate, to hand-drawn animations projected large scale.
Central to my practice is the constant evaluation of the role of the artist when it comes to conservation-related matters. What good is it to make a pleasant animal portrait that hangs over a couch, while the real-world animal that was portrayed still has all the odds stacked against them? This line of questioning has pushed my practice in recent years, as I work towards balancing being a professional artist and ensuring my overall practice has some sort of broader purpose - even it that purpose is simply to present animal welfare matters in ways that inspire viewers to share the information outwards.
Biography: Sarah Ronald is a Canadian artist living in Port Coquitlam BC.
A Summerland British Columbia native, Ronald’s diverse upbringing in the rural Okanagan shaped her future as a conservation-minded animal artist and aspiring creative writer. After graduating from the Okanagan University College with her BFA, Ronald relocated to the lower mainland of BC, settling in Port Coquitlam where she now works out of her home studio.
In recent years Ronald has immersed herself in conservation issues and studies, she has explored the possibilities of community connection through artist residencies, and she has continued building upon a lifetime of real-world natural experiences that have been instrumental in furthering her studio practice.
Partial proceeds from art sales are donated to non-profit wildlife organizations doing the on-the-ground work to support and rehabilitate wildlife.
