The Penticton Art Gallery and Aurora Matheson Fine Art Gallery are once again presenting The Sculpture Day event on March 23rd, 2024 during the inaugural Ignite the Arts Festival, a nine-day celebration of art and culture. Sculpture Day will be located at Aurora Matheson Fine Art Gallery, 221 Martin Street and on the City Centre Gym Parking lot, adjacent to the Gallery.
This event will take part in conjunction with the Spring Art Walk which showcases art throughout greater Penticton. The official time for both of these events will be from 11:00-4:00 P.M.
What to Expect: Live Painting
Similar to a mini-art market, artists will be displaying their work as well as selling paintings, cards, and commissions. Meet, greet, and connect with local artists as they craft right before your eyes.
Sculpture Exhibition & Demo:
Check out the outdoor sculpture exhibition as artists showcase their pieces. You will also have the opportunity to watch as local sculptors build magnificent works, inviting you to engage with the Sculptors through Q&A.
Ice Sculpture Event
We are very excited to announce that Aaron Grant, a well known Canadian ice sculptor will be creating a piece for Ignite the Arts during the day. If you have never seen this form of carving before, you won’t want to miss it! This will take place in the parking lot.
About Aaron Grant:
Aaron Grant has been sculpting ice since 2010. Formally a resident of Penticton, Aaron began his sculpting interest up at Apex mountain sculpting snow as a hobby. Eventually he earned the title of BC snow sculpture champion at the Vernon winter carnival. This allowed him to travel to the famous Quebec carnival representing B.C. in the National championship. After moving to Nanaimo, Aaron found that sculpting ice was a way to practice his artistic skills which turned into a small business.
Since beginning in 2010 he has completed over 400 ice sculptures with only pictures of them as a memory. The best part of being an ice sculptor is being able to quickly transform a large 300 pound block of specialty ice into a unique and eye-catching work of art in a short amount of time. As a public display of artwork, it is unique and yet fleeting. One that has to be in person to appreciate it. He enjoys doing public demonstrations and contests because the audience is always so enthusiastic and curious.
Live Music:
Indulge your senses with the soulful melodies of Yanti & Friends, a rhythm & blues jazz band set to grace Sculpture Day with their enchanting performances. Join us for an unforgettable musical journey filled with rhythm, harmony, and dancing, reminiscent of last year's lively celebrations.
Family Sculpture Contest!
11:00-4:00 P.M.
Create, experience, and delve into the world of sculpture with our family friendly sculpture contest. As part of Sculpture Day, we invite family and friends, young and old, to come and participate in creating imaginative pieces with your dream team– a maximum of six people. You will get to work with your chosen team to produce an artistic creation or interpretation of your desires. At 3:00 the teams will be judged esteemed local sculpture professionals. If you are interested in participating in this fun event, you must pre-register for the competition. This event is free to attend and we encourage early registration to make sure you get your allocated area to construct your work. 7:00 PM TO Late - Fomites Tour, Die Job,
Dusty Pines and We Are Not a Cult!
@ The Hub, 260 Martin St
Mild mannered employees by day, bloodthirsty punk rock monsters by night, THE FOMITES are a three piece punk band based out of Vancouver.
Oozing out of the alleys, sewers, and graveyards of the Lower Mainland, The Fomites are influenced by skateboarding, pizza, and all things rad. They sing about Stephen King, cosmic horror, and partying in the face of Armageddon in their signature blend of fast, fun, spooky skatepunk.
Dearly departed, let's get this party started.
DIE JOB is a melodic punk band from East Vancouver, Canaduh.
When they're not writing protest songs that punch holes in the fabric of society, they're writing sardonic songs to help them cope with the madness of being alive. Dark Comedy and happy little melodies. Word play. Storytelling. Shit-talking. A search for honesty.
“It’s funny how many people got mad at me over the poetry on this album. I figured it was par for the course - straight ahead, punk rock dogma. You know, attacking the police, dreaming of dead politicians, and maybe not ..always .. spitting out the mouthwash at the end?? … Just me??” - Cyrus
“Die Job feels pop punk but not in a Machine Gun Kelly featuring Travis Barker way. It feels pop punk in the grimy way, the 924 Gilman way, the honest way. Die Job’s debut album is a snot nosed kid with the talent to back them up.” - theminute.ca
Snot nosed? Pop Punk!? Pshhh… Critics, Who needs em.
DUSTY PINES is a band from Vancouver-ish, BC (ok fine, mostly Surrey) made up of the slimy waste of sludgy swamps, the prickliest thorns on a bush that bears no fruit, and the leftover crust of what used to be girlish hope.
WE ARE NOT A CULT a punk rock religious experience from the Okanagan.

2:00 pm - Art Requailated & Pysanky Easter Egg Painting
Elk’s Hall, 343 Ellis St
$50 - Join local artist Ron on Monday, March 25th for a unique event called "Art Requailated," where participants can unleash their creativity by adding their own special touch to an existing painting. Ron invites art enthusiasts to infuse their personality into the artwork by incorporating a quail of their choice. Whether you're passionate about quails or simply love expressing yourself through art, this event promises an enjoyable and interactive experience. For a fee of $50, all necessary supplies and instructions will be provided!
$25 - Let's start with the word itself: Pysanky (plural form of pysanka) is from the Ukrainian word "pysaty" meaning "to write." Pysanky eggs are perfect for Easter and are hand-drawn creations—first in pencil using guidelines to section off an egg into a grid pattern, and then with detail within the grid. Afterward, pencil lines are covered with beeswax and layered with colors of dye, similar to the batik work done on fabric. Join this facilitated class at the Elk’s hall as they host two artsy workshops!
To secure your spot to either workshop, please register by calling 250-492-2949 or visit the Elks at 343 Ellis St to sign up. Don't miss this opportunity to explore your artistic side and contribute to a collaborative masterpiece!

7 PM — 9 PM - A Hundred Million Suns - Kagan Goh Poetry Reading
199 Marina Way, Penticton Art Gallery
Guest curator Kagan Goh will be performing a poetry reading of a brand new suite of poems entitled A HUNDRED MILLION SUNS — a book of love poems dedicated to his wife Julia Hogeling on the occasion of her 50th birthday celebration. These love poems were written during a bout of hypercreativity over 3 days by the poet who experienced a recent month-long hypomanic and manic episode — the worst episode Kagan has experienced since his initial diagnosis in 1993 — which threw the normally idyllic happily married couple into a downward spiral. Kagan calls himself “God’s Glorified Secretary taking dictation from the Divine. Something powerful was coming through the pipeline. Julia is my Muse and what came through the music of the spheres was an outpouring of unconditional love for my beloved wife Julia.” A HUNDRED MILLION SUNS is a testament to the strength and resiliency of true unconditional love while the married couple struggles to keep their love afloat in the midst of the maelstrom of Kagan’s madness. The reading celebrates true love as eternal weathering the temporary insanity of Kagan’s fluctuating mood swings. A HUNDRED MILLION SUNS tells a deeply emotional, moving and powerful story of recovery, acceptance and unconditional love between destiny soul mates.
“Goh's poems are powerfully moving and transformative. He welcomes us into places rarely made so accessible. We need such travelers of deep inner journeys to help us expand our boundaries.” — Joy Kogawa. Author of Obasan, Itsuka, Naomi’s Road, The Rain Ascends, Gently to Nagasaki, A Song of Lilith, A Choice of Dreams, Woman in the Woods, A Garden of Anchors, Jericho Road
