EVELYN ARMSTRONG

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Evelyn graduated with ECI Honours in Lithography, completed her MFA at Vermont College, and is currently pursuing on her PhD at the Institute for Doctorial Studies in the Visual Arts. Her focus is philosophy, aesthetics, art theory, and art criticism. She also is a graduate of Liberal Studies, Simon Fraser University, trained in gestalt and art therapy and studies in Anthropology, First Nations, Sociology, and History of Art.

Her works have been included in Spectrum Canada in Montreal, 1976, the Permanent Collection of the BC Ministry of Forests in 1980, and the 20th Okanagan Valley Jury Show, and subsequently the first BC Festival of the Arts, Kamloops — both in 1982. She was awarded a Canada Council Explorations Grant in 1981 and a Canada Council Explorations Grant in 1981 and a Canada Council Art Bank purchase in 1982. The artist was also a master beekeeper and taught beekeeping workshops, and has acted as an apiary inspector for the BC Ministry of Agriculture.

As an integral part of the community she was a founding member of Malaspina Printmakers and the Nicola Watershed Community Roundtable on the Environment. She directed and sponsored the Nicola Valley Community Arts Council and the Canada Development Project for the Arts in Merritt. Her accomplishments and contributions are integral to developing art communities of British Columbia.

Her exhibition record is extensive and she has received numerous awards both for her community work and as an artist/teacher.

Her work in our Permanent Collection was included in the 5th Annual Gala Benefit Dinner and Art Auction at Theo's in June 1982, a benefit event for the operation of the Penticton Art Gallery.
