ABOUT THE ARTIST
George Angliss was born in Penticton, British Columbia. He was inspired to become an artist by his experience of the natural beauty of the Okanagan’s valleys and lakes. He studied at the Vancouver School of Art (1939-1940; 1943-1945) where he met and married Kay, also an artist. He also studied at the Ontario College of Art (1941-1943). Returning to Penticton after art school, he worked designing buildings and homes, running an orchard, and working from his art studio. He exhibited his work in the British Columbia Artists exhibitions from 1943 to 1948, and in the 1945 British Columbia at Work exhibitions, all of which were at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
In 1958 he moved to Calgary, Alberta where he worked as an advertising Art Director before accepting a position as an art instructor at the Alberta College of Art in 1962. He attended the 1963 Emma Lake Workshop led by Kenneth Noland.
For eighteen years he taught Studio Art at the Alberta College of Art, retiring in 1981. During this time, he became an influential figure within the Calgary art community, both as an educator and artist. In addition to being a senior instructor at ACA, he was a workshop leader and lecturer and was involved with numerous arts organizations, including Alberta Culture Visual Arts Branch and the Alberta Society of Artists (Lifetime Honorary Member). He was an Alberta College of Art founder, was on the ACA Building Advisory Committee, and was also involved with the Art Gallery of the South Okanagan in Penticton (now the Penticton Art Gallery).
Angliss was known nationally as an accomplished painter, sculptor, and printmaker. His works are represented in many public and private collections, including: the Alberta Foundation for the Arts; Alberta House, London, England; Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta; the Confederation Art Centre, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and the Penticton Art Gallery, Penticton, British Columbia. His art has been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout Canada and overseas, including Paris, London, Brussels, and Japan. His interests were wide-ranging, but he probably found his greatest success as a watercolourist.
