M. ISABEL ROBERTS
ABOUT THE ARTIST
M. Isabel studied art in Operto, Portugal, finishing with a Masters Degree in Painting. She continued with post graduate studies at St. Martin's School of Art, London, where she attended the advanced course in painting for two years. There her interest in photography developed. Later in Vancouver, British Columbia, she took the Photographer's Eye - Workshop III under Denes Devenyi at the University of British Columbia.
She has exhibited her work, including painting, prints, and photography at Escula Superior de Belas Artes do Porto, Portugal; Galeria Zen, Oporto; Arvore; St Martin's School of Art, London; University of Brighton, Garden Centre of Art; Jermyn Street Gallery, London; and Photographer's Eye, Exhibition Hall Multi-Cultural Centre, Vancouver.
The artist says, "The idea that led me into photography was the opportunity of looking and capturing life, nature, and people through a different way of seeing. I started photography as a parallel medium to painting and I found that it gave me a new perspective in my way of seeing and grew independent from my painting activity to become another way of expression and communication... The process present in my photographs is composed by two or more images assembled together in one print... I use more than one negative printed on the same paper, sometimes enlarging one more than the other to give the subjects special relationships to each other."
Her work in our Permanent Collection was gifted by the artist following her exhibition in the Penticton Art Gallery, November 12 - December 4, 1982, Identifications: The Photographs of M. Isabel.
