MICHAEL SIME: MY JOURNEY

Meadowlark with a Story to Tell
conté and charcoal on paper
14” x 18”

Note: These are indeed confusing and troubled times. Maybe the Meadowlark depicted in my drawing was anticipating trouble — the Meadowlark Festival and the associated show of my art at the Penticton Art Gallery both cancelled! But not all is lost: Paul and McKaila to the rescue! I hope you enjoy this virtual show…

The Moon has Fallen
conté and charcoal on paper
11” x 14”
Collection of Kena + Laurence Cormier

Note: Originally this was to be a picture of Eve in the Garden of Eden, with the white circle being the apple. Carole (my wife), thought that it looked like the moon. Hence the poem:

The moon has fallen,
come sing and I will dance for you
little cuckoo bird.

Daisies
watercolor on paper
12” x 14”

Note: This was my very first attempt at painting with watercolors. On my retirement, the staff on the maternity ward at the Penticton Regional Hospital gave me a wonderful new lens for my camera with which I photographed these daisies in my garden. I was not happy with the background. It was raining scattered big globs. With my hand covering the flowers I let two globs land on the upper part of the painting. I then dropped two different blues into the pools. I think this was the moment when I became hooked on painting.

Imagery and Statistics
acrylic on paper
4 x 6 ft

Note: Some years back, whilst waiting for a flight in the Kelowna airport, I opened up a magazine. I was horrified to see for the first time the photograph taken by the late Kevin Carter of a vulture and a starving little girl. For three years (1968 to 1971) I worked in Livingstone, Zambia as the physician in charge of running (among many other things) the obstetric department. In 1990 I undertook a detailed analysis of every single delivery in the unit. (Remember the punch cards?) This report was published by the Zambian Council for Scientific research. Based on this report I was invited to join a group, funded by the Bill Gates Foundation and the World Bank, centered at the University of Aberdeen, who were investigating ways to more accurately determine maternal mortality statistics around the world. Being a clinician rather than a statistician I chose to take up the offer of a job in Penticton!

The horrific back ground statistics in this painting are for the year 2011. The footprints are mine. Thankfully each year the situation has shown progressive improvement in the statistics for both maternal and infant mortality. There is still a long way to go.

The Mouse

10” x 18”

Note: Sometimes a simple drawing becomes special and can be used to describe the fundamentals required to make a drawing work. In this case, the requirement was to get one line right and the eyes in the right place! I used a big chunk of charcoal forcing it into the paper in a manner where the charcoal broke up on the surface. I then used my fingers to move the charcoal over the paper exerting various degrees of pressure in the process. Sadly I haven't been able to repeat this process with the same degree of success. I think that had to be a very special chunk of charcoal…
