Artist Statement: My recent work on canvas involves drawing, painting, collage, and making marks using a variety of tools (watercolour, ink, acrylic, crayon, pastel, graphite), and continues to seek ways to connect these media in order to bring forth more complex results.
I rely on nature for inspiration, creating semi-abstract works with recognizable and familiar elements. Seeing patterns in stone or brick, noticing the way the leaves have fallen onto the ground; the myriad of colours and textures on a piece of lichen… I create by instinct, interpreting the natural world around me through marks, lines, shapes, patterns; the constant shifting of seasons and transient colours, galvanizing my creative pathways.
My process involves several steps, and each work moves through various and repeated stages of painting and collage, echoing traces of its past through each added overlay, and allowing elements to peek through the transparent nature of the collage material and applied paint. I work intuitively, and my marks and brushstrokes are often spontaneous and fast.
My work attempts to challenge the idea of impermanence, and plays on the idea of non-attachment. It is process based, without too much initial planning or mapping out. This requires a certain amount of trust. I must accept what happens at each stage of painting and allow it to stay or go without much contemplation. I often equate this to what happens in the natural world around me: seasons change, elements come and go, nothing is permanent, etc., yet there is always evidence of the past gone by, and out of that newness is created.
